Additionally, they updated the critique so it actually reads properly now. I overheard them arguing about it this morning. One of them wants to overhaul it even more, but they had to go to class. They've been texting me since with things to do as far as "damage control" goes, so I don't appreciate you trying to out me. Besides, I volunteered my cosplay to be critiqued at some point. because as you can clearly see, it needs work.

Hon, they updated the critique because people called them out and pointed out all of their mistakes. It’s just “damage control” at this point, as you say, and the damage control isn’t helping much.
If you volunteered your cosplay for critique, they should have started with that since you requested the help. I personally think your Link is rather good.
You doing their dirty work for them by answering all the Ask questions that don’t allow people to respond Anon implicates you as being involved in the blog as well. Until I called you out by name all of your responses to my asks were “Our, Us, and We” now you’re just making “I statements”
Don’t let your friends use you.

Wind Waker: Exploring Dragon Roost by *CatalystSirene

Link: RinachurMedli: Hythe (Sirene)Photography by Kyle Mistry @ Katsucon ‘13.

Link:
Boots:
What is the material? It doesn’t even look like suede, let alone a suitable boot-material for adventuring
The boot is obviously not very tight around the foot, since it does not follow the general curve of the foot.
The shank (top) of the boot is loose as well
There is no edge on the sole – not super bad, but it’s weird
If Link hadn’t been kneeling, a lot of these details would have been hidden
Pants:
No official art or in-game renders to support tights vs. pants
Medieval tights should have visible seams. They were composed of 6 parts – two per leg and two for the cod piece.
Still fine, we’re just doing our job and being picky.
Tunic and hat:
Looks good!
The hat could have been unwrinkled during the posing
Props:
That’s a fine Wind Waker you have got there
Belt buckle looks odd and out of place. Could be improved if made out of resin, but it’s hard to tell from this picture.
The ears are good – well blended and a good style
Hair:
The eyebrows are obviously feminine. A bit of eyebrow pencil would be great. Link has oddly dark and very full eyebrows.
The wig should be fuller. Wind Waker Link has very poofy hair, similar to a Bieber style but longer and fluffy.
Other notes:
The makeup could have been more boyish
A less feminine pose would be better as well. The hand positions are too delicate, especially when combined with the raised and posed chin.
Medli:
Shoes/boots/claws:
Heels are inappropriate here. Medli has human feet and heels on a child are all kinds of ick.
Dress:
Please, please, please, make that dress longer. Medli and Link are both children, and we don’t want to think about children running around in short dresses.
The seam on her scarf is in the front, which is weird but not terrible. Just… rotate it towards the back or something.
Wings:
The tops of the wings, where her arms are, is made of fun fur.
The feathers look like paper with a stick down the center for stiffening.
We’re more inclined towards giving the feathers a pass since Wind Waker had a very cartoon-y style, but actual feathers would have been better.
We feel the wings should extend from the shoulders, not part way down the bicep. It’s hard to find reference pictures either way, but it makes the most sense considering birds.
Other notes:
The beak-nose could have been a bit more angular
The hair needs less side bangs and more tucked behind the ears.
Headband looks good, but it could sit higher
Overall: Two good cosplays, but there is room for improvement. Remember what age your characters are and have that reflect in their poses and costumes. The short skirt and heels will haunt this critic for a while.

Aww look, someone being “helpful” by throwing out unwanted “critique” into the Tumblr void. Yes, void. Notice how nobody fucking cares? Did you inform these cosplayers and photographer that you are using them as an example? Seems silly if not. You’re not really helping them unless you also left this as a critique on their DA. Or is this only to use cosplayers people really like as “examples” to build up your own confidence?

What is the material? It doesn’t even look like suede, let alone a suitable boot-material for adventuring

The boot is obviously not very tight around the foot, since it does not follow the general curve of the foot.

Way to go there captain obvious. Like they can’t look at their bootcover and know it’s too loose. Bootcovers that aren’t stretchy are difficult. You could have at least offered advice on how to pattern and piece these things together out of a fabric “suitable for adventuring”. As it is, you’re just pointing out the obvious. You also ask the Tumblr void what the material is instead of the cosplayer? So helpful.

No official art or in-game renders to support tights vs. pants

Medieval tights should have visible seams. They were composed of 6 parts – two per leg and two for the cod piece.

Still fine, we’re just doing our job and being picky.

You say there’s no official art or in game renders to support pants or tights either way and yet you suggest they make 6-part-period-accurate tights for a TOON LINK COSTUME? This makes absolutely no sense. Cosplay is a costume reproduction hobby for sure but the art shows no seams. The tights make sense here. Also, Link does not live in any real time period. To inject period-accurate nonsense would take this design further from looking like it does in the artwork. This type of stuff belongs with smelly nerds LARPing in their crushed velvet Folklore patterned outfits around a campground and not in making a deceivingly simple cartoon costume that has like, zero visible seams. There’s a place for 6-piece tight pant things and it’s not in this costume.
You sound like you’re talking out of your ass. Your job? lol Okay. You don’t even post your credentials which, from this critique would be dubious at best IMHO.

The shank (top) of the boot is loose as well

Okay you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about and are banking on cosplayers not knowing terminology. The top of the boot is not the shank. The shank is actually as far from the top of the boot as you get. It’s the part that runs from the heel to the outsole and sits under the arch. It adds structure and support to the bottom of the shoe and varies in size depending on the boot’s use. The top of the boot is just called the “upper” just an FYI.

The wig should be fuller. Wind Waker Link has very poofy hair, similar to a Bieber style but longer and fluffy.

Okay let me get this straight. She should make 6-piece tights to make it as realistic as possible but have big fluffy yellow hair to make it as cartoony as possible? Which is it? Realistic or cartoony?

The makeup could have been more boyish.

At least offer tips how to make it more boyish if this is your opinion.

heels on a child are all kinds of ick.

It’s one thing if the shoes are inaccurate, it’s another to just inject your opinion this way. So helpful.

Please, please, please, make that dress longer. Medli and Link are both children, and we don’t want to think about children running around in short dresses.

These designs are bizarrly proportioned to adult-sizes and have been interpreted in various ways. I’m sure if they would have stretched it out to be longer you’d have taken issue with that as well. It doesn’t seem to be done to sex-up the character. I don’t get the “ick” feeling from this at all.

The fur is a common way to do cartoonish wings in in the anthro costuming community which is probably where they pulled it from. It looks okay as down feathers and allows her room for her arms. IMHO it looks softer and thicker than “fun fur” which is really light and thin and gross looking.
Some people don’t like using real feathers. Ethical reasons, practicality reasons, budget reasons… making your own from felt, fur, foam or paper is en vogue right now.
Oh no they didn’t interpret this fantasy world in the way you feel they should have. They should certainly strive to please you with your awesome credentials and stuff.

The beak-nose could have been a bit more angular

The hair needs less side bangs and more tucked behind the ears.

Headband looks good, but it could sit higher

Nitpicking.
This whole blog doesn’t sit well with me at all. Anonymous, insecure know-it-alls being nitpicky under the white hat of virtue. If anyone points out the things wrong with this blog they can claim “I don’t know why anyone would be offended or humiliated, we’re just trying to be helpful and everyone should care about being as perfect in our eyes as possible!” Pfff. What a waste of time. At least make it a submission only blog and put your own stuff out there so people can judge if your opinions are even worth their time. I’d rather go to my friends or an open thread on a forum where I can get real feedback rather than some anonymous tumblr blog. At least my friends don’t misuse garment terms to try and sound more knowledgeable than they are. This whole thing is so silly and not very helpful.

Reblogging for Patches’ A+ critique of the “critics.” lol
And the cosplayers in question were NOT asked and were kind of uhhhh about the whole thing, lol.

The responses to this critique are well done and totally appropriate given the ridiculous nature of the original post and the “critics” total lack of understanding of what an appropriate critique is. .
I wanted to add that one of the people helping out with this “cosplay Critics” is tumblr user http://astrosmusings.tumblr.com/  Their deviantart is http://astro-kid-248.deviantart.com/gallery/  He claims it’s his friends blog, and that hes only helping out by responding to asks by people who don’t have Anon asks open. If your friends wont put their names with the blog, you probably shouldnt either.  Just as bad as the the people running the blog, if not worse actually. Good job being a doormat for your friends poor choices.

Seriously, if we believe a 14 year old is too immature to know how to take a pill, do we really think she’s adult enough to handle an unwanted pregnancy?

The truth is that the age restriction is completely arbitrary, tied only to our puritanical comfort levels. And listen, I get it; I think it’s fair to say that most people are uncomfortable with the idea of a 14 year old having sex. But here’s the thing - access to Plan B isn’t about keeping a 14 year old from having sex - by the time she gets to the pharmacy, that ship has sailed - it’s about keeping a 14 year old who has already had sex from getting pregnant. And despite what urban legend (or past embarrassing FDA memos) may tell you, making emergency contraception more available is not more likely to make young teens have sex - it will just make them less likely to end up pregnant.

We can’t let our discomfort with teen sex trump young people’s right to sexual and reproductive health and we can’t continue to let politics trump science. If we care about young women’s health and bodily autonomy and integrity, we’ll drop all age restrictions from emergency contraception. Anything less isn’t just illogical - it’s immoral.
